Time is one of the most important resources we have. Time cannot be exchanged, borrowed or bought. We all have the same 24 hours every day. Even with all of our modern time-saving conveniences like email, fax machines, microwaves and dishwashers, you can no longer schedule hours in the day. It is up to each of us to make the best use of our time as we cannot get it back.

Here are some time-saving tips that you can use to optimize and free up your precious time:

Double. One way to maximize your time is to double it. Try to exercise while vacuuming or watching TV. When you talk to your kids, use this time to check their backpacks and ask about their day. In your free time you talk to your girlfriend on the phone. Why not cut out coupons or leaf through the sales newspaper?

Use the services available to you.

Take advantage of pick-up and delivery services from shops, dry cleaners, and restaurants in the neighborhood. A wonderful service would be to hire a teenage girl or an errand service to handle specific errands for you.

Schedule similar tasks at the same time.

Try to return all of your emails in the same amount of time instead of sitting at your computer all day and returning the incoming emails. Allow about an hour to avoid returning multiple e-mails sporadically during the day.

 Combine your errands outdoors.

When you go shopping, pick up your necessary prescriptions, walk to the post office, and fill up your gas tank. That way, you don’t have to leave the house 3-4 times in the same day.

 Organize your home.

We spend a lot of time looking for things, recreating lost things, and cleaning up clutter. Create a place in your home to keep, record, and pay your bills, keep your stamps, envelopes, and other things that you use frequently. Don’t forget your kids. How many minutes or hours a day do you spend looking for shoes, socks, toys or that favorite cuddly toy? Organize things so that your children can attend to some of their daily needs. Use shoe racks that hang on the closet door so your kids can hang their shoes. Use clear small toy storage boxes and a desk to store all of your craft supplies.

Take advantage of the little moments.

Take care of small projects while waiting. For example, if you wait in the doctor’s office, you can use this time to plan and write your shopping list or to-do list. If you use public transport, use this time to read the accumulated magazines.

 Plan ahead.

We cannot always predict what will be needed, but we can be prepared for certain things. Choose and place your children’s clothes the night before. When you’re cooking dinner, double the recipe and freeze half to use in a meal for weeks to come. Before you go to bed, make a short list of things to do the next day.

Make sure your schedule is flexible.

When the sun is shining on a rainy day, grab these kids and go to the park or take a spontaneous trip to the zoo! Just take care of yourself and be careful with your time.
